Big polluters’ “net zero” plans are yet another PR scam created by the transnational corporations that most impact the planet to evade responsibility for cutting emissions immediately, to avoid ending deforestation in their supply chains and to continue dodging accountability for slave labor and for violations of human rights and the rights of Indigenous peoples and nature.
These plans present green lies, distracting and manipulating public opinion with deceptive campaigns. At the heart of each plan is one sole objective: to continue the same polluting practices and rights violations as usual, or worse than usual—exploiting and impacting the planet more and more. When these polluters present targets for emissions cuts, they are all very distant (15, 20, and even 30 years from now) and riddled with ambitious promises, based on technologies that have never been tested at large scale.
To explain this new chapter in the playbook of eternal denial of #BigPolluters, Corporate Accountability, Friends of the Earth International, and Global Forest Coalition published the report “The Big Con: How Big Polluters are advancing a ‘net zero’ climate agenda to delay, deceive, and deny”, launching worldwide this week, when the London Climate Action Week 2021 takes place (June 26 – July 4).
